Chapter 21

Someone is banging on the door to the cabin and I would guess it is nearly noon now. My fever broke during the morning hours while we rested and I wake up feeling much more myself than before but my limbs remain heavy.

Bennett jumps over me and answers by stepping into the hall, clearly keeping my modesty in mind. I eavesdrop on the conversation from my spot on the bed but, as soon as I hear what is being discussed between James and Bennett, I force my body upright slowly to not reopen any wounds that have just been cleaned and sealed.

James sounds eager to get things started from the hall. “That good for nothin’ Cecil has been in the hold all day. The crew is ready to see him punished. I’m of the mind to maroon him on the next scrap we see, and the crew wants a share of blood, too.”

Giving the crew their piece of the bloodshed is one of Bennett’s least favorite parts of his job. I cannot say I share his feelings. I do not have to be on the other side of the door to imagine Bennett’s expression. He is likely trying not to grimace.

After a brief pause, Bennett answers, “Let’s make him sweat. Once we near the cays, we will let Cecil swim there. Perhaps the sharks will save him from his lonely fate.”

Before James can turn to leave, I call through the door. “What are Cecil’s crimes? I never heard the tale in full.”

“Quartermaster said he meddled with the boy. Kid took a sizeable piece out of him before Cecil could manage it. Quick lad, that one! Who woulda thought he had it in him?”

At least Hugh managed to make Jon the hero rather than the victim.

To the tempo of James’ receding steps, I pull on my shirt. My stiff shoulders protest my task.

When Bennett returns, he shakes his head at me for standing by the door and listening. “Let me at least put more oil on your back before you go up.”

A little frightened that if I lay down again I will never find the gumption to get back up, I lift my shirt over my mutilated back and lower myself gingerly onto the bed. “What did you mean by making Cecil sweat?”

Bennett grabs the oil and returns to the bed to straddle my hips. “The crew will tie him to the mast by a short length of rope and stab at him with their blades while he tries to avoid them. He is certain to be good and bloodied by the time we drop him overboard.”

Just the idea of it has put Bennett in a foul mood. I can hear his frown by his tone alone.

I think the punishment is too good for Cecil. Not because it isn’t cruel enough but because I will not be allowed to kill him myself as I would very much like to.

Once Bennett finishes with my back, he wraps the worst of it in clean linen before allowing me to put my shirt and vest on over it.
